wood engraved image of a Challenge Machinery Co. type-high gauge

Challenge Type High Gauge
A type high gauge is used to check the height of “cuts,” engravings, or any other material intended to be letterpress printed. The distance between the two prongs is 0.918 inches, or type high. This image, scanned from the American Wood Type Mfg. Co.’s Catalog No. 36, is a hand cut wood engraving. The advertising copy from the AWT catalog reads:

The Challenge Type High Gauge illustrated is the standard inexpensive instrument. It is absolutely accurate, being ground to .918″ (type high). At the price at which they are sold, every man who handles cuts before printing should have one.
