What Wood You Do?

Large vat of pied wood type

On March 29, I posted a 6 line Star Corner and wrote of its discovery amongst a large vat of pied wood type at Architectural Artifacts in Chicago. There you have it, photographic proof. When I first happened upon this horror show, there was a woman using the metal scoop shown in the picture to – I can hardly type the words – dig down into type and toss it across the vat. To give you a better sense of scale, the circumference at the rim of this large metal bowl was between 6–8 feet. The type was more than a foot deep in places.

I’m going to have trouble sleeping tonight.
